Women's Soccer Blanked at Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's soccer team fell on the road on Tuesday night, dropping a 3-0 decision at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Valiants drop to 3-6-0 (2-2-0 Skyline) with the loss, while the Mariners end September atop the Skyline Conference standings at 5-3-2 overall (5-0-1).

The Valiants withstood the Mariners' relentless attack in the first half, as USMMA outshot Manhattanville 10-3 in the opening 45. Alexa Bennett (Sparrowbush, N.Y./Port Jervis) stood tall in the Manhattanville cage with three first half saves to keep the game scoreless heading into intermission. The Valiants were only able to log one shot on goal in the first half, a boot from Johanna Gibson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R Murrow) in the 12th minute that was turned away by Eva Fields.

Merchant Marine continued to put pressure on the Manhattanville defensive unit before breaking through in the 52nd minute. Lauren Enterline was able to lift the ball off her back heel over a diving Bennett, getting just enough on the kick to roll it into the cage.

The Mariners wasted little time capitalizing on the momentum, scoring an insurance tally just 15 seconds later as Morgan Mitchell scored her seventh of the year.

In all, USMMA outshot Manhattanville 14-1 in the second half, with ten total shots going on target. Sakura Lopez added one final goal for the home team with 1:10 remaining in the contest.

Bennett finished with a career-high 10 saves in the effort, falling to 1-2-0 on the season. Through five appearances, the sophomore holds a 1.23 goals-against average this year.

Gibson finished with a team-high three total shots across her 72 minutes on the field. Jennay Amaral (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) added the Valiants' only other shot of the game as Manhattanville's lone attempt of the second half.
