PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's basketball team dropped a tight-knit defensive battle, 70-67, against conference opponent Sarah Lawrence on Saturday afternoon in Kennedy Gymnasium. The Valiants (7-6) even out 2-2 in conference play while the Gryphons (6-7) move to 3-1.
Isiah Middleton (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) led scoring for the Valiants, knocking in 19 points. Middleton also led the way with two steals and two blocks on the defensive side of the court while pulling down six rebounds.
Fronting the squad in assists with four,
Chris Robinson (Bedford-Stuyvesant, N.Y./Westminster School) tallied 15 on the day. Robinson grabbed six boards, sent out four assists, took away one steal, and knocked down one block.
Andrew Saint-Louis (Norwalk, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) led the team in rebounds with seven, five coming from defense, while dishing out three and taking away one steal. He followed close behind in scoring with 14.
Eamon Kelly was the head of the Gryphons with 20 points, three assists, and a steal. Chris Dougherty knocked in 15 points while grabbing 12 boards and two blocks to lift the away team to the conference victory.
Manhattanville and Sarah Lawrence set the pace for the defensive battle ahead from tipoff. The squads passed the lead back and forth ten times in the opening 20 minutes of play. Starting with a three from
John Ranaghan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), making the score 22-19. The Valiants held a slim lead for the next 6:13 before the teams ultimately reached an even 29.
Sarah Lawrence's Andrew Kim knocked down a buzzer-beater to put his team up two, heading into halftime 34-32.
After a two-minute scoring drought was broken with a jumper from
Carlos Urena (Corona, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy), the visitors went on a 16-8 run, which pushed their lead out to 50-40 with 13:29 to play. Robinson led the way with 11 in a 27-20 MVL run, before ultimately falling short 70-67.
