ELMIRA, N.Y. – Manhattanville University field hockey fell short, 2-1, at Elmira College on Saturday afternoon. The Valiants fall to 5-9 while the Eagles improve to 4-9.
The home team struck first, taking a early lead in the first quarter converting on a penalty corner. Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) stood strong in the goal throughout the first half, stopping the Eagles from adding to its lead with nine saves through 30 minutes.
Just three minutes into the third quarter, Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) took advantage of a stilled defense, brining the ball up the left side. She then sent the ball into the circle to Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) who sent a shot on target around the keeper for the tie.
Unfortunately the Valiants got caught in a scramble and after Doherty made the initial save, the Eagles were able to tip the ball into the cage to regain the lead with 10 minutes to play; ultimately securing the victory on their home turf.
