PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville University women's lacrosse opened the 2026 campaign against Hartwick College on Friday night with a loss of 21-9, putting the Valiants 0-1 early and the Hawks to a 1-0 start.
Pietra Cabral (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) led the Valiants across the board with five points on five goals. The senior launched seven of eight shots on goal, including two from the eight-meter. She added one groundball and one draw control on the night.
Bridget Sonju (Canton, Conn./Canton High School) and
Ashley Glass (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) were the only other Valiants to find the back of the net, each with two goals. Sonju successfully converted on two opportunities from the free hash while also adding one assist in her collegiate debut. Glass fired three shots on goal, scoring her first duo of the season, and fought for two groundballs and caused a turnover.
Jocelyn Mazo (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) fronted three categories during opening night by pinpointing two assists, fighting for seven possessions in the circle, and pushing the Hawks to four turnovers.
Eight Hawks scored in the win, led by Parker Laurin with six goals on eight shots. Lily Dempsey scored four of her own while assisting four.
Sonju grabbed the first goal for the Valiants, taking advantage of the man-up situation and converting from the free hash on the eight. In the second quarter, Cabral put three more goals on the scoreboard. Sonju scored her second of the night with just under two minutes until halftime, followed by Glass less than a minute later. The Hawks dominated the field in the first 30 minutes, heading into the break 11-6.
Hartwick shut down Manhattanville in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 8-0.
Cabral added two goals in the final 15 minutes, and Glass added one. The away team continued to add to their goals, reaching 21 as the final buzzer went off, securing the season-opening win.
