Cabral Scores 100th Career Goal in Women's Lacrosse Loss to Ramapo

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Pietra Cabral (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) reached 100 goals for her collegiate career as part of a team-leading five-point performance in Manhattanville University women's lacrosse's 19-14 loss against Ramapo on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Valiants to 0-2 to begin the season, while the Roadrunners improve to 2-1.

Coming off her five-goal performance in the Valiants' season opener two weeks ago that pushed her career total to 99 tallies, Cabral scored three time against the Roadrunners to move past the century mark. The Mineola native reached the milestone with the first goal of the second quarter, converting on a woman-up opportunity off a feed from Kaci Pierce (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) 44 seconds into the new frame that opened a three-goal run for the Valiants.

Cabral is the first player to score 100 goals in a Manhattanville uniform in three years, with Maura Kelly being the last Valiant to reach the century mark back in 2023.

Ashley Glass (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) set a new personal-high with four goals for the Valiants, while Bridget Sonju (Canton, Conn./Canton High School) finished with four points on two goals and pair of assists.

Ramapo scored twice in the first four minutes to stake claim to the early lead before the Valiants got on the board on Pierce's first of the year ahead of Glass' opening tally of the game by way of Cabral, tying things up with 6:54 left in the opening quarter. Erin Smeilus put the Roadrunners back in front three minutes later, but the Vals were quick to respond as Jocelyn Mazo (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored from Sanju before assisting Glass on a woman-up strike with 1:51 left for Manhattanville's first lead of the affair. Kassidy Baez scored the equalizer before the quarter drew to a close, sending the game to the second tied up at 4-4.

Cabral's milestone marker prefaced unassisted goals from Mazo and Sonju that spotted the Valiants a 7-4 lead just 1:56 into the second quarter. Ramapo controlled the ensuing nine minutes with three straight goals of their own to pull back even with 4:45 left in the half. Glass completed her first-half hatty with a go-ahead strike from Sonju with 74 seconds to go as the Valiants looked poised to carry a lead into the intermission, but the Roadrunners struck twice in the final 30 seconds to take a 9-8 lead through 30.

Ramapo fed off the momentum of the late goals to extend the scoring run to six-straight goals, taking a 13-8 lead through four minutes into the third quarter. Glass ended the run with her fourth of the game from Cabral, but the Roadrunners scored three more goals to close out the quarter, outscoring the Valiants 7-1 in the frame to build up a 16-9 lead.

The Roadrunners extended the lead up to a game-high eight as Darrien Pennachio scored 23 seconds into the fourth. Manhattanville ended the day on a 5-2 run over the final 10:51, opened by a pair of extra-attacker goals. After Pierce scored her second of the game, Mariella Manicchio (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Ossining) scored her first career goal as one freshman assisted another as Emelina Leccese (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) picked up her first point with the helper. Cabral added her final two goals of the game, bringing her season total to a team-leading eight, sandwiching Sonju's second of the game as Manhattanville ran out of time on a comeback bid.
