WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Manhattanville University men's volleyball program was swept in both matches at the King's College Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon, facing King's College (Pa.) in the early game, followed by Hunter College to wrap the day.
GAME ONE – KING'S COLLEGE (PA.) 3, MANHATTANVILLE 0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19)
In the first match, the Valiants were led by
Trevor Kolar (South Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) with nine kills,
Kyle Simmons (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) with six, and
Adrian Bonilla (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Baldwin School of Puerto Rico) with five.
Pedro Machado (Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil/Colegio Oficina) continues to add to his season total with 25 of 27 assists.
Matt Diamond (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) fronted the defense once again with 17 digs.
The Valiants jumped out to an early 8-3 lead, sealed with a service ace from Simmons. Continuing the momentum, they pushed out the lead to 15-7. King's College went on a seven-point rally, bringing the match within one, 16-15. After back-and-forth scoring, the host team took the lead 23-21 before solidifying the first set 25-23.
The Monarchs kept the ball rolling, going out to start the second set with a 7-1 lead. The Valiants slowly chipped away at the lead, taking advantage of service errors and attack errors to get within five, 16-11. Despite a consistent effort, King's College secured set two 25-19.
After an even start, four consecutive kills earned the home team an 8-4 lead to start the third set. With back-and-forth scoring, the Monarchs held tight to their lead, finalizing the day with a 25-19 win to take the match 3-0.
GAME TWO – HUNTER COLLEGE 3, MANHATTANVILLE 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18)
Joe Granadillas and Simmons lead the offense with eight kills each, followed closely by Kolar with seven.
Justin Lau (Queens, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) recorded the match's sole ace.
Luca Peterson (Boston, Mass./Newton North) (17) and
Mason Moon (Rockport, Texas/Rockport-Fulton) (11) lead in assists, combining for 28.
The first set began with even scoring before the selected home team pushed out for their largest lead thus far, 13-9. After the short rally to grab a lead of four, the Hawks held on to take the first set 25-19.
The Valiants took an early lead in the second outing, fighting to 12-9 before the Hawks answered to grab its first lead of the set 13-12. Taking advantage of three-point rallies, Hunter kept the lead to take set two 25-19.
The Hawks kept things going to start set three with a seven-point rally, taking a 9-3 lead. The Valiants continued to send off kills but never came within four as the selected home team took the neutral site match 3-0.
