Men’s Volleyball Holds Off UMSV in Five-Set Win

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattanville men's volleyball took an early two sets before holding off Mount Saint Vincent's late comeback to take the match 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Valiants are 3-8 (2-0 Skyline) while the Dolphins fall to 4-7 (0-2 Skyline).

Trevor Kolar (South Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman), Joe Gandarillas (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem HS East), and Pedro Machado (Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil/Colegio Oficina) led Manhattanville's offense.
Kolar found his way to the top of the leaderboard with 14 kills, six aces, six digs, two assists, and 1.5 blocks. This is the freshman's fourth match reaching double digits in kills. Through two conference games, he sits at 33 kills. Gandarillas was right behind with 13 kills, six digs, and one ace.
Machado recorded his fourth game surpassing 20 assists, setting 23 today. The junior also received 12 digs, sent down six kills, and sent three aces.

Justin Lau (Queens, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) was a threat at the net, shutting down UMSV with five total blocks. Five blocks remain the sophomore's career high, with his last time recording it being against Wilkes on Jan 31. Evan Rapp (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) made his way around the court, receiving 20 digs. 20 digs are the most he's taken since the road game at Old Westbury, Mar 29, 2025, where he recorded 23.

Manhattanville jumped out to an 11-6 lead thanks to two consecutive aces from Kolar. After back-and-forth opportunities for both teams, the Valiants were able to take advantage of two service errors and an ace from Luca Peterson (Boston, Mass./Newton North) to push the score within five of the first set's wrap. Gandarillas threw down two kills and sealed the deal with an ace to put his squad up 1-0 on the day.
The second set was evenly laid out with neither side taking more than a four-point advantage. Kolar sent six kills down, Gandarillas four, and Machado three, including the set-sealing kill.
The Valiants entered set three with a quick five points, holding the lead by three or more until a series of kills from the home team brought the score within two, 14-12. Attacking errors allowed UMSV to even out at 14. After rallies from both sides, the Dolphins grabbed five straight to get within one. Despite the late rally back to 24, the home team avoided the sweep, taking set two 26-24.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 12-7 lead with three straight aces. Both sides took advantage of errors before the home team's streaks pushed their lead to 21-13. A kill by Lau followed by two aces from Kolar closed in on USMV before they forced the fifth set with 25-19.
Kolar continued to push his teammates with four kills and an ace in the final set. The two opponents swapped the lead five times through the fifth set before the Valiants were able to take control of the court and take the match 16-14.

Up Next – The Valiants remain on the road, facing Purchase on Mar 3 at 6 PM.
