MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Manhattanville baseball played its final game of the spring break trip to The Ripken Experience, falling short 9-6 against Worcester Polytechnic Institute Tuesday morning.
Griffin White (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) led the Valiants' effort against the Goats, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run, and an RBI.
Five of the team's six runs were scored in the third inning.
Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) got the offense started, followed by RBI singles from
Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) and
Alex Exarchakis (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) before Scott Ennist Jr and
Joe Kearney (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) wrapped up the inning.
Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) started on the bump, going 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits.
Kevin DeMilia (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) pitched through the seventh, allowing one hit in eight batters faced.
Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) wrapped the eighth inning, not allowing a hit and having one unearned run cross home plate.
FIRST INNING – WPI 2, MANHATTANVILLE 0
WPI scored on an RBI single and a groundout to second.
SECOND INNING – WPI 3, MANHATTANVILLE 0
The third run of the game came from a fielder's choice, with the throw going to third.
THIRD INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 5, WPI 3
Clara put the Valiants on the board with a single into left to score
Jack Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). Tashik sent a single up the middle to advance Clara to third and score White from third. Exarchakis tied the game with a single to shortstop to score Clara.
With a ground out from Ennist Jr, the Valiants took a 4-3 lead and advanced Exarchakis to third. Kearney sent the ball out towards third to grab the RBI single and extend the lead to 5-3.
FOURTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 5, WPI 5
After an RBI double brought the game within one, the Goats tied the game with an RBI single up the middle.
FIFTH INNING – WPI 8, MANHATTANVILLE 5
WPI regained the lead with a two-run double to right center and grabbed their third of the inning off a single up the middle.
SIXTH INNING – WPI 8, MANHATTANVILLE 6
White battled through a seven-pitch at-bat to fly out to left, sending home
Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) from third.
EIGHTH INNING – WPI 9, MANHATTANVILLE 6
The Goats sealed the day, taking advantage of a fielding error, taking an unearned run to finish out the scoring opportunities.
