Men’s Volleyball Shuts Down UMSV

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville men's volleyball shut down the University of Mount Saint Vincent at home in a quick three-setter on Thursday night. The Valiants improve to 5-4 in conference play, 6-12 overall. The Dolphins (6-11) fall to 2-6 in Skyline action.

 

The Valiants were led to victory by Trevor Kolar (South Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) with 10 kills and three aces. Pedro Machado (Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil/Colegio Oficina) followed close behind with eight kills and one ace; Joe Gandarillas (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem HS East) rounded out the threat on attack with seven kills.

Mason Moon (Rockport, Texas/Rockport-Fulton) recorded his fourth game with 20+ assists, finding his teammates successfully 26 times. Moon now has 201 assists through 18 games. Defensively, Evan Rapp (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) received eight digs followed by Machado and Gandarillas with five apiece.

 

After an even start, Manhattanville went on a 6-0 rally to put their lead up 9-3. After the Dolphins grabbed two, a kill from Adrian Bonilla (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Baldwin School of Puerto Rico) capitalized on four more points, adding to the home team's lead. The Valiants held the Dolphins to single digits as the Vals inched towards victory, up 22-9. Two kills from Machado and a kill by Justin Lau (Queens, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) sealed set one.

Set two started with consecutive scoring opportunities until both teams met at 7. The Valiants gained a slight advantage with four quick points, putting the score at 12-7. Steady pace followed through the next set of points before the Valiants secured set two 25-19.

The final set of the match was the most even throughout, with neither team going on more than a four-point rally at a time. Manhattanville jumped to a quick 7-3 lead before UMSV came back to within one, 7-8. The back-and-forth was interrupted with a kill from Lau followed by two aces from Kolar and two errors going in the way of the Vals to put the score at 21-14. Despite bringing the deficit within four (23-19), the Valiants secured its second straight home sweep 25-19.

 

Up Next – The Valiants remain at home for their pink out game coming on Sunday at noon against Yeshiva.
