PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's tennis team continued its winning ways of late, logging a third-straight 7-0 victory on Thursday afternoon over Western Connecticut State. The Valiants improve to 4-5 overall, closing out a perfect three-match homestand.
After taking all three doubles flights on Tuesday against Saint Joseph's Long Island by 6-0 finals, the Valiants' No. 2 tandem of
Kazuma Kato (Nerima, Tokyo, Japan/Aioi Gakuin) and
Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) pitched a shutout over Jack Buck and Axel Javier.
Thomas Jouanneau (Luneville, France/Lycee Arago) and
Elouan Charretteur (Fontainebleau, France/Lycée International Francois Premier 1er) flirted with a shutout victory of their own in No. 1s, ultimately defeating WestConn's top pairing of Aidan Burke and Jose Zambrano 6-1.
Sami Badre-Hume (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bay Ridge Prep) and
John Curtin (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) found themselves in a marathon in No. 3s against Alex Maldonado and Henry Gsell, needing a tiebreaker after a 6-6 stalemate. The Valiant pairing outlasted WestConn's, winning the deciding set 7-0 for a 7-6 victory.
The Valiants did not drop a set in singles action, led by a 6-0, 6-0 shutout by Kato over Zambrano in the No. 2 flight. Jouanneau and Charretteur had little trouble in their flights, with the former defeating Burke 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1s and the latter besting Buck 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 3 court.
Nicholas Gervasi (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Epsom College) picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Javier on No. 5s, with
Robert Zomer (Bussum, the Netherlands/Sint Vituscollege) defeating Jake Leon 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 matchup. Guzman wrapped up the victory with the final draw to conclude, defeating Maldonado 6-4, 6-2 in No. 4s action.
