Men's Volleyball Ends Road Trip With 3-0 Sweep of Yeshiva

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Wrapping up a three-match road trip, the Manhattanville University men's volleyball team defeated Yeshiva University in straight sets on Thursday night.

Manhattanville (4-9, 3-1 Skyline) bounced back from its 3-0 loss at Purchase on Tuesday night with its second sweep of the season (25-17, 25-27, 25-16). The Valiants' .287 hitting percentage was the team's second-highest mark of the year behind the .355 clip Manhattanville posted in a Feb. 5 sweep of Pratt.

Joe Gandarillas (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem HS East) had a career-high 17 kills to lead Manhattanville's attack effort. The junior hit .536 and committed just two errors in one of the best offensive performances in the three-year history of the program.

Fernando Martinez (Hartsdale, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) logged seven kills, while Pedro Machado (Vitoria da Conquista, Brazil/Colegio Oficina) provided another six. Wilton Martinez (Bronx, N.Y./Celia Cruz Bronx HS of Music) and Justin Lau (Queens, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) added five terminations each as Manhattanville held a 42-18 advantage in the kill department.

Mason Moon (Rockport, Texas/Rockport-Fulton) handled primary setting duties, playing all three sets and accounting for 28 of Manhattanville's 42 assists. Luca Peterson (Boston, Mass./Newton North) added seven, while Matt Diamond (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) added another four.

Speaking of Diamond, the senior led the Valiants with 14 digs in just two sets of action. Martinez dug out eight balls with Moon finishing with five.

Manhattanville scored three straight points to open the match, never relinquishing the first set lead. The Maccabees (1-8, 0-3) were able to respond with four of the next five points to get within one, but the Valiants went on a 4-1 run of their own to regain distance. Yeshiva made one more push to a one-point deficit at 10-9 before Manhattanville went on another 4-1 spurt. The Valiant lead swelled to seven at 23-16 after a 3-0 run with kills by Martinez and Gandarillas as Manhattanville took the opening point three rallies later, capped off with a Gandarillas ace for the 25-17 win.

After three ties led to a 6-6 score to open the second, Manhattanville took control with seven consecutive points. The run featured four-straight aces from Machado to put the Valiants up 13-6. Yeshiva got back within three, to which the Valiants went on another run with five straight to go up 19-11. Manhattanville used the momentum to roll to a second-straight 25-17 set win.

The Valiants closed out the night with a dominant .412 third set, logging 17 kills to just three errors. Like in the first, Manhattanville scored the opening three points to take a lead that held from start to finish. The Maccabees got back within one and after both sides traded the next six rallies, Manhattanville picked up three points in a row and six of the next seven to begin pulling away. Yeshiva went on only one multi-point run after falling behind by six, scoring four straight, but by that time Manhattanville's lead had swelled to 19-11. The Valiants withstood the Maccabee's final effort and ended the night on a 6-1 run, completing the sweep with a 25-16 win.
