Baseball Forces Extras Twice in Saturday Battle

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville baseball went into extra innings in both games in the first series loss of the season, a conference doubleheader against Maritime (N.Y.). The Valiants (17-8, 5-3 Skyline) forced game one into the eighth and game two into the tenth, falling to the Privateers (13-10, 10-0 Skyline), 5-4 and 18-14.

 

GAME ONE

Dylan Roberts (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) went 3-for-4 in game one, crossing the plate once to put the Valiants on the board. Griffin White (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) sent in two of the four RBIs off a hard-hit single popped into shallow centerfield. Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) recorded one RBI with a double, scoring one for himself in the same inning. Alex Exarchakis (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) sent home the fourth run for the Valiants with a hard-hit ball right up the middle.

THIRD INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 4, MARITIME 1

The Privateers scored first with a SAC fly out to left.

Mezzaucella tied the game at one with a double into right center to score Roberts. White sent home two more off a single into centerfield after being down 0-2 in the count. Exarchakis kept the ball going, scoring Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) from third with a straight shot through the infield.

 

SIXTH INNING – MANAHATTANVILLE 4, MARITIME 3

Maritime brought the game within one, both runs scored unearned.

 

SEVENTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 4, MARITIME 4

The Privateers tied the game off a double into right-center.

 

EIGHTH INNING – MARITIME 5, MANHATTANVILLE 4

Maritime scored the winning run off a single through the left side.

 

GAME TWO

Jack Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) fronted the Valiants in the second outing of the day, going 3-for-6 with a walk, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) went 3-for-3 with three walks, three runs, and one RBI.

Anthony Peterson (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) scored three Valiants while going 2-for-5. Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Travis Szober (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) entered the game late, making an immediate impact with two RBIs and scoring two runs.

Joe Kearney (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial), Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), and Mike Scozzafava (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) all contributed one RBI respectively towards the team's 13.

 

FIRST INNING – MARITIME 1, MANHATTANVILLE 0

Maritime scored first with a single through the right side.

SECOND INNING – MARITIME 4, MANHATTANVILLE 2

The Privateers tallied on two more on a sac groundout and an error by third.

The Valiants scored its first run with a single from Peterson. The second run was scored off a single from Schozzafava.

THIRD INNING – MARITIME 4, MANHATTANVILLE 3

Alberto sent a hard-hit ball into left-center to bring the game within one.

FOURTH INNING – MARITIME 6, MANHATTANVILLE 3

Maritime added on two runs, unearned.

SIXTH INNING – MARITIME 6, MANHATTANVILLE 5

Goohs and Peterson added on two back-to-back runs.

SEVENTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 8, MARITIME 7

The visitors added on one run.

The home team took its first lead of the second game. Moeller doubled into right-center to score Szober to start the inning. Alberto sent a SAC fly into to tie the game at seven before the Valiants jumped ahead on a wild pitch, scoring Moeller.

EIGHTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 9, MARITIME 8

Maritime added on one run, unearned.

Moeller scored Goohs to regain the slim lead.

NINTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 12, MARITIME 12

The Privateers took a 12-9 lead off of two two-RBI singles.

The Valiants battled back to force extra plate appearances as Szober tallied two RBIs and Mezzaucella walked in the tying run.

TENTH INNING – MARITIME 18, MANHATTANVILLE 14

Maritime rallied in the tenth inning to push out to a six-run lead.

Despite a hard-fought battle, the two runs in the bottom of the tenth fell short, finalizing the 18-14 loss.

 

Up Next – The Valiants take the field again tomorrow, facing Mount Saint Mary at noon and three.
