Baseball Walks Off Game One; Mercy Rules Knights in Game Two

PURCHASE, N.Y. – After a close-knit game one ending 2-1 with a Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) walk-off double, Manhattanville baseball's bats exploded for 23 runs on 20 hits to take game two in seven innings 23-2. The Valiants improve to 19-8 (7-3 Skyline) while the Knights fall to 7-20 (2-10 Skyline).

GAME ONE

Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) walked off game one with a smashed ball into right-center field. The double was the senior's only hit in game one, while he also tallied on a walk.

Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) sent home the first run for the Valiants in the bottom of the first inning, grabbing his sole hit for the day, a single into left.

Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) started the day on the bump for the Valiants, going 5.0 with two strikeouts and one earned run. Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) entered for the final three innings of the game, shutting down the Knights to finish the job. Tumbleson earned his third win of the season while striking out one and allowing only two hits.

FIRST INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 1, MSMC 0

Anthony Peterson (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) led off for the Valiants, earning the free base after a nine-pitch at bat. After Peterson stole second, Alberto sent him hustling around third to put the home team ahead early.

FIFTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 1, MSMC 1

The Knights began the inning with a walk before scoring with a single through the right side.

EIGHTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 2, MSMC 1

Griffin White (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) walked to start the first rotation in extra innings before Jacob Oakley (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) entered the game as a pinch runner. Dylan Roberts (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) executed a by-the-book sacrifice bunt to advance Oakley. Goohs sent a well-hit ball over the centerfielder for a walk-off double, scoring Oakley from second.

GAME TWO

The electric ending to game one gave the Valiants a confidence boost heading into game two. 12 of the 19 Valiants to see the plate added at least one hit to the scoreboard.

Jack Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) both went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Moeller sent the ball far into the outfield for two doubles and earned a free base, while he also crossed the plate three times for the home team. Mezzaucella added a stolen base to his season total as well as scoring twice in the seven innings.

Travis Szober (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and Alex Exarchakis (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) led in RBIs with three a pop, both also scoring one run themselves. Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) carried his momentum from game one into the second outing, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Jack Lally (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley) made his second appearance of the weekend, his first start, going 5.0 with eight strikeouts, four hits, and zero earned runs. Peter Lanausse Jr. (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) entered on the bump for the final six outs, sending down one and allowing no hits.
