Men's Tennis Sweeps Purchase in Senior Day Victory

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's tennis team capped off a four-match week and celebrated Senior Day with a 7-0 victory over Purchase on Saturday. The Valiants improve to .500 for the first time since September with a 7-7 overall mark and remain perfect in Skyline Conference action at 3-0.

Prior to first serve, the team honored graduate transfer Thomas Jouanneau (Luneville, France/Lycee Arago) and senior Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) for their contributions towards the program.

The two honorees took to the court together for No. 1 Doubles, continuing the celebration with a 6-2 win over Eli Palagatshev and Isaac Spottek. The Valiants would sweep all three doubles matches, with Sami Badre-Hume (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bay Ridge Prep) and Nicholas Gervasi (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Epsom College) defeating Dexter Pretnar and Markian Nychka 6-1 in No. 2s and Robert Zomer (Bussum, the Netherlands/Sint Vituscollege) and John Curtin (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) taking down Ryan Hobson and Pedro Llonch-Vidalle in the No. 3 clash, 6-4.

Manhattanville kept rolling into singles, with Elouan Charretteur (Fontainebleau, France/Lycée International Francois Premier 1er) getting the wins started with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Pretnar in No. 3s. Badre-Hume won his No. 6 flight over Hobson, 6-1, 6-1, while Kazuma Kato (Nerima, Tokyo, Japan/Aioi Gakuin) took down Spottek 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2s tilt. Over in No. 5s, Gervasi picked up the win over Llonch-Vidalle with a 6-2 opening set score before the Panther retired due to injury in the second set, tied 1-1.

Perhaps the only fitting way for their Senior Day to end, Guzman and Jouanneau were the last Valiants in action as the other draws reached their conclusion. Guzman ultimately defeated Nychka 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 flight ahead of Jouanneau besting Palagatshev on the show court by a final of 6-0, 6-2.
