Men's Lacrosse Toppled at Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team wrapped its three-game road trip on Tuesday night, falling 18-3 at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The loss drops the Valiants to 4-7 overall and back to .500 in Skyline Conference action at 2-2.

The Mariners opened the night on a 10-0 run through the first eight and a half minutes of the second quarter. Manhattanville was able to finally break through USMMA's defense with five minutes left in the half, with Anthony Cozza (West Harrison, N.Y./Byram Hills) and Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) both striking in a 54 second span. Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Freddie Steenson (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) picked up the respective assists on the Valiant tallies.

Unfortunately, the two strikes did little to stymy the Merchant Marine attack that went on to score three more times before the end of the half, taking a 13-2 lead through 30 minutes of play. USMMA would account for both of the goals of the third and tacked on three more in the fourth before Michael Karabinchak (Piscataway, N.J./Saint Joseph Metuchen) snapped Merchant Marine's string of eight unanswered goals with 3:24 left in regulation off a Tallerico assist.

Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) finished with 20 saves for the Valiants, playing 49:49 in the cage with 16 goals allowed. Elijah Bell (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) played the remaining ten minutes and change, surrendering two goals.

Manhattanville's 11 ground balls matched a season-low from March 11's game against Montclair State. Chris Mercado (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) was one of few Valiants able to have success in the ground ball game as he came away with four, aided by his five faceoff wins. Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) added two ground balls as the only other Manhattanville player with more than one.

The Valiants also only caused a pair of turnovers, their lowest mark since last March against Wentworth when the team finished with zero. Palladino and Ryan Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) were credited with the lone forced takeaways.
