PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team began Skyline Conference play on Wednesday night, falling 11-5 on GoValiants.com Field to Maritime College. The loss drops the Valiants to 2-6 overall.
After being tied 1-1 at the end of the first quarter and 4-4 at the half, Maritime pulled away by outscoring Manhattanville 7-1 over the final 30 minutes of play. The Privateers ended the night with seven unanswered goals.
Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) scored twice in the loss, the lone Valiant with multiple goals in Wednesday's action.
Nick Corace (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) collected a pair of assists along with his ninth goal of the year, while
Michael Karabinchak (Piscataway, N.J./Saint Joseph Metuchen) and
Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) also scored.
In a defensive-oriented opening quarter, Corace scored for the Valiants 5:16 into the game for Manhattanville while Tyler Mahood scored his first of the game for Maritime as the lone tallies of first 15 minutes.
Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) put Manhattanville back in front in the second quarter, finishing off a pass from Corace with 9:28 left in the half.
Maritime got back-to-back goals for Peter Horstmann and Mahood to take their first lead of the night. Karabinchak tied up the game off a
Jack Roberts (Middlefield, CT/Lyman Hall) assist with 4:43 left before Tallerico scored from Corace with a man-advantage with two minutes to play. Nick Uzakewicz tied the game up again at 4-4 before the half drew to a close.
Tallerico struck again 1:15 into the third out of the break, but the lead was shortlived as Hannaford netted the equalizer for the Privateers 49 seconds later. Momentum began to shift in Maritime's favor after the Privateers scored a man-down to take the leader with 8:56 left in the quarter. Maritime added three more goals before period's end, benefiting from a two-minute non-releasable Manhattanville penalty where the visitors scored twice. The Privateers scored twice more in the fourth.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 13 saves in the loss, extending his streak of double-digit save totals to all eight games of the season so far. The senior pushed his season save total up to 112, now surpassing 100 saves in all four of his years at Manhattanville.
Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) returned after missing the last three games due to injury, leading Manhattanville with four ground balls. Ulzheimer,
Ryan Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac),
Chris Gragnano (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook HS) and
Mike Mooney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) all added three ground balls for the Valiants. Mooney also forced four Maritime turnovers, matching his career-high from his freshman season against Drew on Mar. 8, 2023.
Chris Guazzo (Rye, N.Y./Rye High School) accounted for all four of the Valiants' faceoff wins in his 11 draw attempts.
