OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Manhattanville baseball split the Friday doubleheader with Old Westbury, holding off a Panthers comeback to take game two 15-13 after falling 2-8 in game one. The Valiants improve to 25-10, 12-4 in conference play as the Panthers (12-16, 4-10) grab the fourth conference win in the season.
GAME ONE
The Valiants were held to just four hits in the first game. Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) and Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) recorded the RBI late to put their team on the scoreboard.
Old Westbury took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, tallying on a run in the fourth and fifth and two runs in the sixth inning.
Manhattanville avoided the shutout in the top of the seventh inning as Jacob Oakley (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) scored off a double from Alberto. Goohs sent a sacrifice fly out to centerfield to send home Alex Enjem (Derby, Conn./Derby) before the Panthers took game one 8-2.
GAME TWO
Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior) went 4-for-5 in game two, recording four RBI and scoring two runs, including two doubles and putting himself out for a sacrifice grounder. Griffin White (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) also sent home three runs, scoring once.
Dylan Roberts (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) scored four runs for the Valiants while going 2-for-4 and adding a walk and an RBI. Roberts started the four-run ninth inning that ended up being the decision maker with the Panthers' attempted 6-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth.
Max Krom (Southington, Conn./Southington) earned his second win of the year on the bump for the Valiants, entering the game in the fourth and going 5.0 with seven hits and five strikeouts, allowing three runs.
FIRST INNING – MANAHATTANVILLE 3, OLD WESTBURY 2
Alberto sent his first double of the game into left field to score Roberts and get the ball rolling for the Valiants. White singled into center to clear the bases in his next at-bat, scoring Alberto and Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle).
Old Westbury added two runs, keeping the game in reach early.
SECOND INNING – MANAHATTANVILLE 5, OLD WESTBURY 2
Alex Exarchakis (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) singled into centerfield before an error by the centerfielder allowed Peterson to score from second base and Exarchakis to round the bases.
THIRD INNING – OLD WESTBURY 7, MANAHATTANVILLE
Old Westbury took the lead off a single, followed by a grand slam.
FIFTH INNING – MANAHATTANVILLE 8, OLD WESTBURY 7
Roberts put the game back within one run, scoring on a wild pitch before Aidan Rosario (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) sent home the tying run, followed by another single from Goohs sent home White to regain the lead.
SIXTH INNING – MANAHATTANVILLE 10, OLD WESTBURY 7
Alberto sent home Roberts, followed by White singling into left to score Mezzaucella.
SEVENTH INNING – MANAHATTANVILLE 11, OLD WESTBURY 7
Mezzaucella took a five-pitch walk to send home Anthony Peterson (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights).
NINTH INNING – MANAHATTANVILLE 15, OLD WESTBURY 13
Roberts singled to the first base side to score Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.), before Nick Porrello (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored on an error by the first baseman. Alberto sent a sac grounded out to third base to send home Roberts. Mezzaucella scored on a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring opportunities.
Two runs were scored on two singles as well as the second grand slam of the game, ultimately falling short as the Valiants took game two 15-13.
