McCann Shutdown New Paltz in Baseball’s Split Doubleheader

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) shoved through game one to secure the 4-0 win before hot bats gave New Paltz the advantage 12-2 in game two. The Valiants (16-6) split the doubleheader with the Hawks (10-9) to wrap a seven-game week.

GAME ONE

McCann recorded his fifth career complete-game shutout. Today's win was his first against a non-conference team (Apr. 2024 vs UMSV, Apr. 2024 vs OW, May 2024 vs SJBK, Apr. 2025 vs OW). The senior allowed only two hits, career best in a complete-game shutout, while recording a season-high seven strikeouts and giving up two free bases.

Jack Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, adding cushion to the lead with a crushed ball into the trees past the outfield in the sixth inning. The two-run homerun was the freshman's second hit of the game. Moeller got his first hit in the fourth inning, advancing Travis Szober (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and himself into scoring position for Logan Alberto (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport Senior).

Alberto went 1-for-3, sending a ball down the left field line in the fourth inning to wipe the bases clean and put the first two runs on the scoreboard for the Valiants.

FOURTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 2, NEW PALTZ 0

Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) got the inning started by wearing the ball before Travis Szober (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) entered to run. Moeller sent the ball into left field to put both runners in scoring position for the next up. Alberto ripped the ball along the left line to send home Szober and Moeller.

SIXTH INNING – MANHATTANVILLE 4, NEW PALTZ 0

Moeller sent his fourth home run of the year over the right-center wall to double the lead, bringing Dylan Roberts (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) home alongside him.

GAME TWO

Griffin White (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) went 2-for-3 in the second set of seven innings, sending his third long-ball of the season over the left field wall, evading the shutout in the fourth inning.

Travis Szober (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) went 1-for-3 with a hard-hit ball off the left center wall, scoring Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) for an RBI double.

SECOND INNING – NEW PALTZ 1, MANHATTANVILLE 0

The Hawks got an early lead off a home run over the left-center wall.

FOURTH INNING – NEW PALTZ 3, MANHATTANVILLE 2

New Paltz added two more to the lead with an RBI single and an RBI double.

White put the Valiants on the board with a homerun before Szober sent the ball to the warning track for an RBI double to score Goohs.

FIFTH INNING – NEW PALTZ 7, MANHATTANVILLE 2

Four more Hawks crossed the plate during the top of the fifth. The first runner scored on a wild pitch. With two on, an RBI single up dead center extended the lead before the final run of the inning was scored as the runner on third stole home after the Hawk on first base was caught stealing second.

SEVENTH INNING – NEW PALTZ 12, MANHATTANVILLE 2

An RBI single and two RBI doubles allowed the visiting team to score five additional runs.

Up Next – The Valiants face Bard College at home on Tuesday, Apr 7. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30.
