Men's Tennis Opens Four-Match Week With Conference Win Over Sarah Lawrence

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's tennis team extended its winning streak against Division III opponents to four straight victories on Tuesday afternoon, opening up a busy four-match week with a 6-1 win over Skyline Conference foe Sarah Lawrence. The Valiants improve to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win.

As has been the story in all of their spring wins, the Valiants got off to a hot start with dominating efforts in doubles. Thomas Jouanneau (Luneville, France/Lycee Arago) and Kazuma Kato (Nerima, Tokyo, Japan/Aioi Gakuin) logged a 6-0 shutout in the No. 1 flight over Clayton Miller and Jules Voorhoeve, with Manhattanville's No. 2 pairing of Elouan Charretteur (Fontainebleau, France/Lycée International Francois Premier 1er) and Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) having matching success against Leon Bronshvag and Jozef Kandrac with a shutout win of their own. Sami Badre-Hume (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bay Ridge Prep) and Nicholas Gervasi (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Epsom College) also flirted with a blanking victory, but looked no worse for wear even with a dropped set against Avery Romano-Villani and Aidan Roney, completing the duos sweep with a 6-1 win.

Manhattanville took the point in five of the six singles matchups to close out the win. Robert Zomer (Bussum, the Netherlands/Sint Vituscollege) was the first to earn a win in solos, defeating Gavin Wright 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot. Soon after, Gervasi finished up his 6-0, 6-3 victory over Romano-Villani in the No. 3 flight. John Curtin (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) took care of things in his No. 6 matchup against Connor Wood, winning 6-3, 6-3 to officially secure the match win for Manhattanville.

Charretteur continued the Valiants' winning ways in the top flight, defeating Miller 6-4, 6-2. Guzman captured Manhattanville's final point of the day, defeating Voorhoeve in No. 2s, 7-5, 6-1.

While ultimately falling in a marathon of a matchup, Badre-Hume left it all out on the court in his No. 4s battle against Bronshvag. After dropping the first set 3-6, the Valiant freshman battled back with a 6-4 victory in set two to force a breaker. Continuing to battle back-and-forth, Bronshvag ultimately outlasted Badre-Hume to capture the Gryphons' lone point of the day with a 12-10 deciding score in the third.
