Field Hockey Tops Elms in Victorious Home Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville University field hockey bested Elms College (0-4), 4-1, in its home opener on Friday evening. The Valiants (1-2) earn its first win of the season.

Manhattanville shut down the Blazers out shooting the visitors 50 to three. Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South), Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and Mariella Manicchio (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Ossining) found the back of the net during the contest for the Vals as each goal came in different quarters.

Guinan got the ball rolling for the home team, scoring her third goal of the season less than eight minutes into the contest off a ricocheted ball from the keeper. With four additional shots sent towards the Blazers' goal, the first 15 wrapped with the home team up one.

Elms netted its first goal of the season, completing a full field rush to tie the game. Just minutes later, Guinan sent the ball across the circle to Doherty; she rocketed the ball to the back right side of the cage putting the Valiants back ahead.

Keena acted fast coming out of halftime with her first goal of the season, assisted by Leccese. In the final 15, Manicchio scored her first career goal during a penalty corner. After a series of saves for Elms, the sophomore received the ball and sent it over the goalie into the back corner of the net to seal the victory.
