OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's soccer team picked up its first conference win of the season on Wednesday night, taking down Old Westbury 2-1 on the road. Manhattanville improves to 2-3-0 (1-1-0 Skyline) with the win, while the Panthers fall to 1-1-2 (0-1-1 SKY).
Just seven minutes in to the action, the Valiants struck off
Jazleen Vega's (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Sunlake) first collegiate tally. The freshman collected a cross from
Jenna Moraglia (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) while driving toward the net, beating the Panther keeper with a tap off her heel to put the visitors up in the early stages.
Old Westbury wasted little time responding, netting the equalizer just 24 seconds later as Jamie Garcia Soto broke past the Valiant backline after a pass from Zamira Yamileth and defeated
Gabrielle Billetz (Clarksburg, Mass./Hoosac Valley) on the breakaway to tie the game in the eighth.
Despite the fast and furious start, things settled down for the remainder of the half as the Valiants held a narrow 3-2 shot advantage. Things remained tied for a majority of the second, despite the Valiants dominating possession, outshooting Old Westbury 9-2 in the half.
Still even at 1-1, Manhattanville finally broke through again in the 88
th minute. The Vega-Moraglia connection struck again, this time with the former taking a corner kick. Vega placed the ball perfectly to allow Moraglia to fly in to bury the ball in the back of the net with her first goal since 2024.
Billetz finished with one save in the win, stopping the lone shot on target she faced in the second half to keep the game tied. The senior earned her first collegiate victory, improving to 1-2-0 on the year with a 2.18 goals-against average.
The Valiants finished the night with a 12-4 shot advantage with Vega leading the way with three shots, all of which were on target.
Deanna Lage (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) added another two shots on frame, while
Miana Eddy (Saint Johns, Fla./Creekside) finished with two shots coming in off the bench.
