Women's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day With Win Over Sarah Lawrence

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's tennis team opened conference play with a victorious Senior Day, with the Valiants sweeping Sarah Lawrence 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Valiants improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Gryphons drop to 3-2.

Prior to first serve, the team honored its three senior members, Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II), Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services). All three were in action in doubles play, with the Ortiz twins partnering up for duos for the first time in their playing careers. The two took center stage in the No. 1 flight, defeating Sarah Lawrence's top tandem of Neomi Spellman and Josephine Jackson, 6-4. Meanwhile, their fellow celebrant Grant teamed up with Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) in No. 3s, being the first pairing to secure a win with a 6-1 victory over Lillian Rodenhizer and Madelyn Kane. Over in No. 2s, Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) and Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) picked up a 6-2 win against Serafina Panuccio and Annabelle Abruzzo.

The Valiants carried the momentum into singles play, not dropping more than two games in any set across all six courts. Filippelli was the first winner, defeating Jackson 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1s play. Soon after, Maddie Maras (Brunswick, M.D./Brunswick) bested Elena Valente 6-2, 6-0 in No. 6s while Gutierrez took down Caroline He 6-2, 6-1 in No. 5s. The Ortiz sisters took care of their business next, with Amaya knocking off Spellman 6-0, 6-1 on Court 2 and Addison defeating Panuccio 6-2, 6-1 on No. 4. Lalman capped off the conference-opening sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Isabelle Ng in No. 3s play.
