RIVERDALE, N.Y. Sweden natives junior Emil Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Daniel Carlryd (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored to give the Manhattanville men's soccer team an impressive 2-0 victory against New York University in a non-conference encounter on Saturday evening at Gaelic Park on the campus of Manhattan College.

Both teams battled throughout the 90 minutes in which 29 fouls and nine cards were awarded, including a late exclusion card to the host Violets. The Valiants got on the board in the 28th minute as Carlryd knocked in his own rebound on a point blank save by Violets netminder Matt Stieve for his second tally of the season. Manhattanville owned a four-shot margin, 5-1, in the first half, putting pressure on the Violets' netminder.

The Violets had a great chance to tie the contest in the 56th minute as Paolo Luciano fired a shot from the top of the box to the low left corner, but senior netminder Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y.)made a tremendous save to keep his team on top.

The Valiants added the insurance goal in the 63rd minute as junior Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) used a free kick near a corner flag to find the head of Sjöberg for his first goal of the season. The game got chippy after Sjöberg's tally, with six cards in the final 27 minutes of action.

NYU once again had an opportunity at goal with 11:24 remaining as Nick Coulson ripped a shot from outside the box, but Torres stood his ground in the cage to make the save. Manhattanville had a chance of its own in the final minutes of the contest as sophomore Papy Ndiaye (Dakar, Senegal) sent a blast to the cage, but a save by Stieve kept it a two-goal contest.

The Valiant defense was superb in the match, not allowing NYU many opportunities in the offensive zone and containing the Violet strikers to the midfield. Torres posted his third shutout, making two saves for his fourth victory of the year. Stieve faced nine shots with six on target and made four saves in the loss.

For Manhattanville, the victory snapped NYU's 10-game unbeaten streak over the Valiants dating back to 1995, when the boys from Purchase needed extra time to defeat the Violets 3-2 on opening day.

Manhattanville (4-2, 0-0 Freedom) will remain below the Long Island Sound for a Wednesday evening matchup against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy beginning at 7:45 p.m. New York University (4-2-1, 0-0 UAA) will get back on the pitch on Monday against Hunter at 5 p.m.
