PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's tennis team swept the three doubles matches and then held on in singles play to earn a 5-4 victory over Sarah Lawrence in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at the Manhattanville Courts.
Manhattanville was led by junior Joeliza Valdez (Brooklyn, N.Y./EBC Bushwick) and sophomore Lisa Bastardi, as both players were dual victors on the afternoon and played a role in four of the team's five points.
The Valiants started the afternoon strong by taking all three doubles matches, jumping out to an early lead. A pair of matches were easily in favor of the home team, as the first-doubles tandem of Bastardi and senior Bo Siek (Phnom Penh, Cambodia/Wissahickon (Pa.)) bested Gwen Adorno and Antonia Verdi by an 8-2 score while junior Natalie Horton (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) and freshman Courtney Bujese defeated Katie Voss and Mary Keridi by the same score.
The big doubles match came at the second flight, as Valdez and senior Kim Kunces (Darien, Conn./Darien) needed a 7-3 tiebreaker to fend off Kayla Pincus and Mary Kim, 9-8.
While the point didn't seem very necessary after doubles play, it turned out to be the difference as Manhattanville won only two of the six singles matches.
Valdez and Bastardi were able to pull out victories for the Valiants in singles play, however, doing just enough to pull out the team win. Bastardi got one break in the first set and then cruised through the second in a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kim at fourth singles, while Valdez clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Pincus at second singles.
Siek nearly got Manhattanville its sixth point of the match, but she dropped a 9-7 tiebreaker to Adorno in the third set after Siek took the first, 6-1, and dropped the second, 4-6.
Manhattanville (1-1) will take the remainder of the fall season off before returning to action on March 7, 2012 at New York University.
