PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team defeated Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon by the score of 6-0 at GoValiants.com Field with six different Valiants scoring goals. With the win, Manhattanville ties the program's all-time record for wins in a season with 14, a total matched only by the 1999 team, which is the only Valiant squad to make the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to the game the five graduating seniors and two departing graduate students of the 2011 squad were honored for their time with the Valiants' program. The seniors honored were Daniel Carlryd (Gothenburg, Sweden/LM Engstrom), Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago/Victory Christian Academy), Adam Kent (London, England/Sutton Grammar), Emil Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Tyreso Gymnasium), Gerby Zelaya (Corona, N.Y./Flushing) as well as graduate students Chukwueloka Muoka (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Leadership Academy) and Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison).
The game started out in favor of the Valiants as they took the first three shots of the period. The third shot came after Old Westbury committed a foul along the near sideline, allowing Kent to take a free kick opportunity that ended up in the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Manhattanville doubled its lead at the 17:56 mark of the first half, as Kent took a corner short to Carlryd, who chipped it up into the goal mouth where it was headed in by junior defender Zack Weidner (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls).
A bevy of shots by George over the next nine minutes resulted in a goal as his third shot made it past Old Westbury goalkeeper Daniel Lazo for his ninth of the season off of a pass by Carlryd. The final 17 minutes of the period passed without a goal and the Valiants went into halftime up 3-0.
After the break, George almost scored his second 3:24 into the period when his shot caromed off the right post and then bounced across the goal line and off the left post. But the Valiants got back in the goal column soon after as junior Edmond Addison (Accra, Ghana/Lincoln (N.Y.)) notched his first of the year after taking a sharp angle shot from the near sideline off of a long pass from Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding).
Less than four minutes later sophomore goalkeeper Zach Benton (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs) came in to relieve Torres and was tested right away as he stopped two point-blank shots that were stopped by the netminder. During the 76th minute, the Olazabal brothers connected on a goal as junior Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) scored his team-leading 24th of the year on an assist from his brother Erick for his team-leading 12th assist.
In the 86th minute freshman Ezra Kauffman-Rogoff (Washington, D.C./Edmund Burke) took a rocket of a shot headed toward the top left corner of the goal that was headed away by a Panther defender for a team save. About a minute later, freshman Yani Quinteros (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) passed the ball toward the right post of Lazo's crease where it was received by Zelaya. The senior dribbled the ball under the out-of-position goalkeeper for his first career goal on Senior Day.
In goal for the Valiants was Torres, who collected his 12th win of the season while making two saves through the first 54:36. Benton played in the final 35:24, making a total of three saves. Lazo took the loss as the converted midfielder made the start in goal for Old Westbury.
In terms of shots the home team outshot their opponents easily by a 34-7 margin, and a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were also well in favor of Manhattanville by an 11-2 count.
Manhattanville (14-3, 5-1 Freedom) will play in their final regular season game this Saturday when they take on conference rival King's (Pa.) in Wilkes-Barre, Pa at 7:00 p.m. A win on Saturday would secure a top-two seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference Championship and assure the Valiants a home playoff game on Wednesday, November 2. Old Westbury finished their regular season with today's loss, dropping their overall record to 6-10-1 overall while having a 5-3-1 record in the Skyline Conference.
