EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – It was a tough day on the courts for the Manhattanville women's tennis team against reigning Freedom Conference champion Wilkes University, as the Colonels dealt the Valiants a 9-0 defeat in a conference matchup on Thursday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
The three-time defending conference champions, Wilkes had little trouble with Manhattanville on the day, dropping more than two singles games in just one match and having one doubles contest go past nine games.
The top flights provided the most difficulty from the Valiants. At first doubles, freshman Laura Fortunato (Providence, R.I./Classical) and sophomore Bo Siek (Phnom Penh, Cambodia/Wissahickon (Pa.)) put up a very good fight before falling to Allison Kristofco and Alexis Donner, 8-5. Fortunato then almost forced a supertiebreaker in her first-singles match with Melanie Nolt before falling by a 6-0, 7-5 score.
Manhattanville (1-10, 0-3 Freedom) will try again for its Freedom Conference victory on Saturday as the team travels to Misericordia University for a 1 p.m. start.
