KINGSTON, Pa. – The Manhattanville women's tennis team was eliminated from postseason contention on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants dropped a 9-0 decision to Misericordia University in Freedom Conference action at the Kingston Indoor Courts.
Despite the lopsided score, the Valiants put a scare into the Cougars in multiple matches. In singles play, freshman Laura Fortunato (Providence, R.I./Classical) took the first set by a 6-3 score from Michelle Cameron in their first-singles matchup, but Cameron rallied for 6-3, 6-2 set victories and the match win. Senior Kaitlin Triano (Rye, N.Y./Rye) also put up a good fight against Ashley Mangabang at third singles, nearly taking her match to a third set in a 6-3, 7-5 loss.
All three doubles matches were competitive as well, with the Valiants winning at least four games in all three. The closest of the three came at the third flight, where juniors Gliceida Galarza (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Leonardo da Vinci) and Kim Kunces (Darien, Conn./Darien) took Ellyn Wingert and Jennifer Spott to a tiebreaker before succumbing, 9-8 (7-3). Fortunato and sophomore Bo Siek (Phnom Penh, Cambodia/Wissahickon (Pa.)) dropped an 8-5 match to Cameron and Breanne Phillips at first doubles, while Triano and sophomore Joeliza Valdez (Brooklyn, N.Y./EBC Bushwick) fell to Mangabang and Courtney Otto in a second-doubles contest, 8-4.
Manhattanville (1-11, 0-4 Freedom) will close out its 2010-11 season on Thursday afternoon, as the Valiants look to go out on the right note against conference foe FDU-Florham starting at 3:30 p.m.
