EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey, the #1 team in Division III according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, showed Manhattanville why they are on top of the national rankings by dealing the Valiants an 18-1 defeat in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest on Tuesday evening at Lions' Stadium.
There were precious few offensive chances for Manhattanville on the night, as the Lions posted a 29-1 edge in shots, recorded decisive advantages in ground balls (13-4) and draw controls (17-4), and forced 14 Valiant turnovers.
Manhattanville's lone goal came from senior Emelda Ogweta (Portland, Maine/Kents Hill), who scored after eight straight TCNJ goals to start the contest. After Ogweta's tally, the Lions scored 10 in a row to close out the match.
Senior Kirstin Betsill (Parkton, Md./Hereford), the two-time reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Goalie of the Week, made eight saves and allowed 16 goals for Manhattanville in 37:59 against the country's best team, while junior Carolyn Levine (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) also had one stop and ceded two scores in the final 22:01. TCNJ netminders Mary Waller and Jess Persicketti did not make a save between them on the night.
Manhattanville (6-6, 5-4 MAC) will continue its season-high four-game road trip on Thursday afternoon, as the Valiants travel to Arcadia University for yet another key Middle Atlantic Conference contest starting at 4 p.m. TCNJ (15-0, 4-0 NJAC) will host Montclair State University on Friday at 7 p.m.
