HERSHEY, Pa. – Shawn Corcoran led all scorers with four goals, as the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown University led by as many as nine goals early on en route to a 14-5 victory of the men's lacrosse team in a Middle Atlantic Conference contest held at the Hershey Park Stadium on a warm Saturday afternoon.
For the Valiants, five players scored single goals, including three goals by underclassmen. Sophomore Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) led his squad with three points, dishing out two assists and scoring once. Senior Mike Strauss (Newark, Del./Wilmington Charter), junior Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), sophomore Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and freshman Brendan Kuntz (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) added the other goals for the Valiants.
The Blue Jays held a 9-0 lead midway through the first half, until a goal with 3:16 remaining in the second quarter by Kuntz broke the 26:44 scoreless streak of the Valiants. Freshman attack Justin Figueroa (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) sent the pass to Kuntz for his second tally of the season.
The Valiants added another goal before the end of the half, as Sahakian found Daly for a man-up goal with just 16 seconds left. Elizabethtown outshot the Valiants, 32-6, after the first 30 minutes and held the Valiants to just 13 ground balls.
Trailing 9-2, the Blue Jays continued to dominate the offensive side of the field, scoring two of the three goals in the third frame. The only Valiant marker of the third quarter came from Sahakian with 5:19 remaining. Manhattanville bounced back to hold the Blue Jays to an 8-7 edge in shots.
In the final period, the Blue Jays scored three times, while the Valiants scored twice. Corcoran gave his squad a 10-goal lead, 13-3 with 12:43 remaining in the contest, but a goal by Strauss cut the deficit back to single digits. Late in the contest, freshman Chris Tiernan (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) found Motherway with 16 seconds left to make it a 14-5 game.
Sophomore netminder Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) made 18 saves in the defeat.
Manhattanville (2-6, 0-4 MAC) will travel to Widener University for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday evening in a MAC contest.
