PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's lacrosse team hung with Elizabethtown College for the first half, but the Blue Jays, ranked 20th in the latest IWLCA Division III National Poll, pulled away in the second half in earning an 18-6 victory over the Valiants in a Middle Atlantic Conference matchup at GoValiants.com Field on Saturday afternoon.
Elizabethtown used a balanced scoring attack to take down the Valiants, as 10 different players scored at least once and 12 players had at least one point. Sarah Cullinan led all players with seven points (three goals, four assists), while Kara Solesky and Bari Rosenstein had three goals each as well for the visitors.
Sophomore Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) had a team-leading three goals for Manhattanville. Senior Emelda Ogweta (Portland, Maine/Kents Hill) also added the 82th goal and 19th assist of her career for the home team, in the process becoming just the eighth player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau.
The nationally ranked Blue Jays held a big possession edge against the Valiants and finished the game with a 40-14 edge in shots. The Valiants did manage to frustrate ETown for a lot of the contest, however, forcing 26 turnovers.
Senior Kirstin Betsill (Parkton, Md./Hereford) had a great game in goal for Manhattanville despite the loss, as the netminder finished with 11 saves and made some point-blank stops on the ETown attackers that kept the score manageable for much of the contest. Rachel Waldman had to make just four saves for the Blue Jays.
Manhattanville (3-4, 3-3 MAC) is back in action on Tuesday when the Valiants travel to Farmingdale State College for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup. Elizabethtown (7-2, 5-0 MAC) will host Alvernia University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
