SCHENECTADY
, N.Y. – Sophomore Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ont./St. David Catholic) recorded her first collegiate victory in the circle in game one as the Manhattanville softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Union College on Sunday afternoon at Alexander Field. The Valiants took the first game by an 8-4 score, but the Dutchwomen came back for a 7-1 game-two win to earn the split.

Schill helped her cause both at the plate and in the circle in Sunday's first game, allowing her to pick up the win in her first collegiate start. Offensively, she went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while in the circle Schill (1-0) allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out two in a complete-game effort.

Led by Schill, the Valiants used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Dutchwomen, as six different players scored a run and four had at least one run batted in. Senior Samantha Howe (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Brianna Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) also had a pair of hits and scored two runs. Sophomore Jessica Van Galen (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) also drove in two while senior Lindsay Zekus (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) scored twice from the leadoff spot.

Manhattanville wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring once in the first and twice in the second to take an early lead. Zekus led off the game with a double and came home on an RBI groundout by Schill to give the sophomore a lead before she took to the circle. Then in the second, junior Ashley Dell (Huntington Station, N.Y./Huntington) led off with a single and Howe followed with a bomb to left center, her second homer of the year.

Union came back with four runs in the bottom of the second to take back the lead, but the visitors scored the final five runs of the game and Schill set the Dutchwomen down the rest of the way to pull out the win. Van Galen drove home Scapperotti with an RBI ground out in the third inning to knot the score again, and then the Valiants scored four times in the fifth to go ahead for good. Schill and Dell had RBI doubles in the fifth, while Van Galen added an RBI single and scored the final run on a passed ball.

Game two did not turn out as successfully for Manhattanville, however, as Union scored the first four runs of the game on the way to a 7-1 victory.

The Valiants managed just four hits and one run against Alyssa Wolejko, with the lone Valiant score coming on a home run by Van Galen in the top of the fourth inning.

Sophomore Michelle Ferlito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) started in the circle for Manhattanville, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings. Classmate Kim Angiolillo (White Plains, N.Y./Good Counsel Academy) came on in relief and pitched a perfect sixth inning to close out the contest.

Manhattanville (7-6, 5-1 Freedom) will continue non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon, as the Valiants host SUNY New Paltz at Manhattanville Field starting at 3 p.m.
