PURCHASE, N.Y.
– Freshman Laura Fortunato (Providence, R.I./Classical) was a double winner for Manhattanville, but the Valiants could not win another match in suffering a 7-2 loss to visiting King's (Pa.) College in a Freedom Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Manhattanville Courts.

Fortunato was a part of both Valiant victories against the Monarchs. The freshman teamed with junior Bo Siek (Phnom Penh, Cambodia/Wissahickon (Pa.)) for an 8-6 victory over Diana Darby and Lauren Breen at first doubles, while Fortunato then made it two wins over Darby with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the first-singles flight.

Unfortunately for Manhattanville, Fortunato's two wins were the only ones of the day. Junior Kim Kunces (Darien, Conn./Darien) nearly pulled out a win in her first match at fifth singles, winning the second set and coming up a couple points short in the supertiebreaker in a 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) defeat. Senior Kaitlin Triano (Rye, N.Y./Rye) also took her match to a third set after winning the first by a 6-2 score, but could not win either the second set or the subsequent supertiebreaker.

The Valiants' other two doubles matches also came close to producing points, but both Triano and Joeliza Valdez (Brooklyn, N.Y./EBC Bushwick) at second doubles and Kunces and sophomore Gliceida Galarza (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Leonardo da Vinci) at third doubles dropped 8-5 decisions.

Manhattanville (1-9, 0-2 Freedom) will return to Freedom Conference competition on Thursday, as the Valiants make up a previously postponed contest at reigning conference champion Wilkes University starting at 3:30 p.m.
