Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The Manhattanville men's basketball team had trouble both putting the ball in the basket and preventing its opponents from doing the same on Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers, as the Valiants dropped a 76-40 decision to the Yellow Jackets at Crenshaw Gym.
It was not a day for offensive highlights for the Valiants, as Manhattanville shot just 25.9 percent (15 for 58) from the field and 0 of 7 from beyond the arc in scoring the fewest points by a Valiant side since December 2002. Conversely, Randolph-Macon shot an even 50.0 percent (33 for 66) from the field and also posted a 48-33 edge on the boards in earning the tournament championship.
Sophomore
Wills Flynn (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) was the lone Valiant in double figures, hitting 4 of 6 shots for a team-high 11 points. Freshman
Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) had his career-opening streak of double-digit scoring games halted at 11 with his seven points, while junior
Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) had a game-high 11 rebounds but only four points on 2-of-10 shooting.
Bramswig also was Manhattanville's representative on the All-Tournament team, marking the third straight All-Tournament honor for the junior forward.
Four Yellow Jackets finished the day in double figures, led by Akeem Holmes with a game-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Andre Simon netted 14 points and Lamar Giggletts and Dylan Cole both had 12 apiece for the home team.
The first half was a struggle for Manhattanville both offensively and defensively, as the Valiants shot 18.2 percent (6 of 33) from the field and allowed Randolph-Macon to shoot 51.9 percent (14 of 27) on the other end of the court.
The Yellow Jackets started the game with a 12-4 run, with Lamont Moore's layup 4:10 into the game concluding the stretch. A three-point play by Maestre got Manhattanville back within seven points at 16-9, but R-MC came back with an 11-2 run to take a 27-11 lead with 8:13 remaining in the half.
The home team's lead ballooned all the way to 20 points (35-15) with a Holmes layup with 5:03 left, and despite a 5-2 mini-run to close the frame the Valiants still found themselves down, 37-20, at the break.
The second half did not start any better for Manhattanville, as Randolph-Macon scored the first 10 points to open up a 27-point lead. The Valiants could not get the deficit lower than 25 the rest of the way.
Manhattanville (7-5) will open up 2013 with its final non-conference game of the season on January 5, as the Valiants welcome SUNY Potsdam to Kennedy Gym for a 3 p.m. meeting. The live GoValiants.TV video broadcast will begin at approximately 2:55 p.m.
