Valiants Open Spring Break with Loss to Denison

Senior Liz Cooper had seven saves on Monday.
Box Score HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Manhattanville kicked off its Spring Break schedule on Monday afternoon in Hilton Head, but Denison scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back in a 15-3 victory over the Valiants.

Sophomore Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) had two goals for Manhattanville, while junior Maggie Howley (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) also found the net and senior Nicole Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) had an assist as well for the Valiants on the afternoon. Senior Ashley DeMarco (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) led the team with three ground balls.

Denison was led by Lisa Feroli and Molly Sbrega with three goals apiece, while Sbrega also had a pair of assists for a game-high five points. Olivia Shiland and Erin Keller had a pair of goals each, while five other Big Red players found the net as well for the victors.

Sbrega opened the scoring 1:04 into the game and the Big Red scored four more to open up a 5-0 lead. Honovich scored Manhattanville's first with 12:30 left in the half, but Shiland scored from the eight-meter arc with 1:27 left to give Denison a 6-1 lead headed into the half.

Denison then came out strongly to begin the second frame, scoring four times in the first 100 seconds to build up a nine-goal edge and take firm control of the game.

Senior Liz Cooper (Old Greenwich, Conn./The Forman School) played all 60 minutes for Manhattanville in goal, turning aside seven shots on 22 attempts. Denison's Hannah Minifie earned the win by making three saves on four shots in the first 48:00 of play, while Grace Bodenmann allowed two goals on four attempts over the final 12 minutes.

For the game, Denison posted a 33-15 edge in shots, although the Valiants did control 11 of the 20 draws.

Manhattanville (0-4) will play its second and final game in Hilton Head on Wednesday, when the Valiants face off with Sweet Briar beginning at 5 p.m. Denison (4-1) will take on McDaniel tomorrow at 2 p.m. in South Carolina.
