HUNTINGTON, N.Y. –
The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team fell to the Montclair State Red Hawks by the score of 15-7 on Saturday afternoon as they rounded out their spring break trip at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington, N.Y. The Valiants were led by freshman Corey Steimel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) who finished the game with three goals and an assist in the losing effort.

Montclair controlled the opening faceoff and took the first three shots of the game in the opening 2:19 with the third shot making its way past junior goalie Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) to open the scoring in the contest. The Valiants turned the ball over and gave the Red Hawks another chance to score and they took advantage scoring with 12:19 to go in the first period to make it 2-0.

The Red Hawks scored the next three goals and took a 5-0 lead, but then took a penalty to give Manhattanville an extra offensive player. The Valiants were unable to capitalize on the extra-man opportunity they did score a few seconds after it had expired when sophomore Brian D'Iorio (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) broke through for the first Manhattanville goal.

Steimel picked up his first of the afternoon on a failed clear attempt by Montclair State and turned it into a goal after causing the turnover on the clear chance. The remaining minutes of the first period ended with the score at 5-2.

The second period went by quickly with little scoring done on the field. In the final four minutes of the period Montclair scored back-to-back goals on Poletto and Manhattanville answered with one of their own off the stick of freshman Connor Castleman (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) to send the game into halftime at 7-3.

After the break Montclair State scored just 10 seconds into the penalty after the Valiants took a penalty prior to the faceoff. However the Valiants struck twice on back-to-back goals from Steimel as senior Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) picked up the assist on the first goal and Justin Figueroa (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) picked up the assist on the second to make the score 8-5.

The Red Hawks then pulled away by scoring the next five goals of the third quarter unanswered to send the game to the final period up by a 13-5 margin.

In the fourth quarter, the Red Hawks made a change at goal sending in Michael Dorn to replace Mark Glander who was in line for his first victory of the season. Junior Billy Motherway greeted Dorn in rude fashion by notching the Valiants' sixth goal of the contest with 13:37 to go in the last frame.

Montclair scored the next two of the game in an eight second span to balloon the lead up to 15-6, with the first being scored on an extra-man opportunity. After allowing the second goal, Manhattanville pulled Poletto in favor of freshman Paddy McClernon (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) for the final 8:53 of the matchup.

The Valiants got a few more chances on the extra-man chance but were unable to capitalize on them. The last goal of the game came out of the stick of Daly, after his initial shot was wide and backed up nicely; he got the ball back and sent it to the back of the cage behind third-string goalie Ryan Affilito to round out the scoring at 15-7.

In goal, Glander picked up the win going the first 45 minutes while stopping six shots and allowing the first five Valiant goals, the latter two goalies allowed one goal each and did not factor into the goalie decision. Poletto took the loss for the Valiants allowing 15 goals and stopping 11 shots, McClernon made two saves in his brief stint in net.

With the extra-attacker Manhattanville finished the game 0-for-4, and Montclair State finished 2-for-5. Clear attempts were successful for both teams as the Valiants went 19-of-24 and the Red Hawks went 21-of-24 while clearing the ball from their zone. Shot totals were well in favor of Montclair as well with a final tally of 53-24.

Manhattanville (1-4) will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Troy, N.Y. to make-up their postponed game against nationally ranked RPI at 4:00 p.m. Montclair State (1-4) returns home to take on the Stevens Ducks on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
