Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Saint Joseph's (L.I.) College used an 8-1 run late in the first half and early in the second frame to build up a lead and hold off the Manhattanville women's lacrosse team by a score of 16-10 in a non-conference matchup on Friday night at Danzi Stadium.
Caitlynn Webber had a game-high six goals and seven points to lead the Golden Eagles, followed by Karalyn Tetelman with four goals and five points. Junior
Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) was the high scorer for the Valiants, scoring four times and assisting on a pair for six points, while sophomore
Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) added four tallies of her own as well.
The first half was tightly contested, as neither team gained an advantage larger than two goals. Goncalves opened the scoring 2:03 into the night with an unassisted score, and back-to-back Honovich tallies later in the frame gave Manhattanville its biggest lead, up 3-1 with 18:41 left.
Goncalves kept Manhattanville in the contest by scoring three more times in the half, the last of which gave the visitors their last lead at 6-5 with 2:42 remaining in the frame. But Saint Joseph's scored the final three goals of the period, including two goals by Tetelman in the final 26 seconds, to gain momentum and take an 8-6 lead into the break.
Senior
Danielle Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) got the visitors back within one with her first goal of the season in the first minute of the second half. But the home team came back with the next five scores to take control of the contest, building up a 13-7 advantage with 12:51 on the clock.
Honovich and Goncalves tried to rally their team, as Goncalves fed Honovich for two scores less than a minute apart, making it a 13-9 game with 6:44 left. But the Valiants could only score once more, as junior
Maggie Howley (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) managed to extend her goal-scoring streak to eight games with a free-position tally with 4:30 to go.
The shots were close for most of the game, with Saint Joseph's possessing a 28-23 edge at the conclusion of the contest, but the Golden Eagles also used a 17-9 edge in draw controls to their advantage as well.
Senior
Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) made eight saves in her first collegiate start for Manhattanville, while Erin O'Connor got the start for the home team and turned aside 10 shots.
Manhattanville (2-7) will continue its five-game road trip on Thursday afternoon, as the Valiants travel to Connecticut College for a 4 p.m. match with the Camels. Saint Joseph's (6-5) will host Mount Saint Mary on Monday at 7 p.m.
