Honovich Tallies Five, But Women's Lax Falls to Farmingdale

Sophomore Casandra Honovich netted all five Valiant goals on Wednesday.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) scored a game-high five goals, but it was not nearly enough as the Manhattanville women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-5 decision to Farmingdale State in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

Honovich had a perfect day shooting the ball for Manhattanville, scoring five times on five attempts, but other than that it was a tough day for the home team: the remainder of the squad managed just six shots and none of them found the net.

Farmingdale was led by Nicole Marzocca, who had a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Christy Thoden also scored four times, while Krystin Shand added two goals and three assists as well for the visitors.

Honovich got the game off to a good start for Manhattanville in the first minute of play, netting her first of the year unassisted at the 51-second mark. But the Rams established control of the contest soon after, as Carly Schneider scored from the eight-meter arc to start a run of six straight goals that gave the visitors a 6-1 edge with 10:52 left.

The teams traded goals the rest of the way and the Valiants went into the break down by just five at 7-2, despite being outshot by a 17-4 margin.

Honovich again got the second half started with a score to get the home team within four, and the squads exchanged goals back and forth to keep the margin reasonable, with Honovich netting her fifth to make it a 9-5 game with 21:27 remaining. But after nearly seven minutes of scoreless play, Jillian Pironti scored her second of the game to start a 7-0 run to conclude the afternoon for Farmingdale.

For the game, Farmingdale State posted a commanding 34-11 edge in shots, while also controlling 15 of 23 draws. Courtney Cook made five saves in goal to earn the win for the Rams. Senior Liz Cooper (Old Greenwich, Conn./The Forman School) started the contest and made two saves on five shots, while junior Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Millbrook School) came on to play the final 51:43 and allowed 13 goals while turning aside nine shots.

Manhattanville (0-2) will play its next four games away from home, beginning on Friday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Kean. Farmingdale (1-0) will open its home schedule on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Hartwick.
