PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's tennis team began its Freedom Conference schedule on Sunday afternoon at the Manhattanville Courts, falling to Misericordia by an 8-0 score. One match was not completed due to rain.
Misericordia did not drop a set in any of the eight matches that were completed, including no more than five games in any singles match and three games in doubles play.
The one set won by Manhattanville on the day did not end up counting, as junior Kirstin Hallett (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) had taken the first set of her sixth-singles match from Brittany Bressler, 7-5, and was tied at 3-all in the second before the rain became too much and the match was abandoned.
Freshman Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) also put up a good fight at fifth singles in her collegiate debut, as she came up just a break short of forcing a second-set tiebreaker in a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Emily Hullings. Senior Gliceida Galarza (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Leonardo da Vinci) and junior Natalie Horton (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) both earned four games as well at third singles and fourth singles, respectively, as Galarza fell to Emily Boro by a 6-2, 6-2 score and Horton succumbed to Cassie Foy, 6-1, 6-3.
Horton also teamed with senior Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./The Northwood School) for the closest of the three doubles matches, falling to Hullings and Katie Moran by an 8-3 score.
Manhattanville (1-4, 0-1 Freedom) will return to action on Wednesday, as the Valiants continue Freedom Conference play by hosting FDU-Florham at 3:30 p.m. at the Manhattanville Courts. Misericordia (3-0, 1-0 Freedom) will travel to defending champion Wilkes on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. start.
