Women's Lax Drops Freedom Match to Eastern, 23-14

Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Manhattanville women's lacrosse team fell in its second Freedom Conference match of the season, as Eastern used an 8-1 run late in the first half to build up an early lead and take a 23-14 victory over the Valiants on Wednesday afternoon at Olsen Field.

Sophomore Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) led the way for Manhattanville in a losing effort, scoring a game-high seven goals and adding two assists for a game-best nine points. With the nine-point afternoon, Honovich became the 11th player to score more than 100 points in a Valiant career and moved herself into the top 10 place in program history with 109 career points.

Juniors Maggie Howley (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) and Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) both had three goals each as well for the Valiants, while Howley also led all players with seven draw controls.

Seven players had at least three points for the Eagles, led by Kendall Rood (four goals, two assists) and Jocelyn Paul (three goals, three assists) with a team-best six points each. Courtney Reinhold and Allie Gauthier both led the squad with five goals apiece as well.

Eastern had a good start to the afternoon, as the home team scored on four of its first six possessions to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Honovich broke the ice for the Valiants at the 7:21 mark of the first half and added another one less than two minutes later to make it a 4-2 game.

It was still a two-goal margin after sophomore Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) scored off a feed from Honovich with 17:32 left, but the Eagles scored eight of the next nine goals to open up a 13-4 lead. Gauthier had four goals of her own during the stretch, with only a Honovich tally breaking up the scoring for the Valiants. Manhattanville did get the final two goals of the frame, with Goncalves and Howley both scoring to make it 13-6 at the half.

After Eastern scored the first two goals of the second half, Manhattanville made its biggest push of the game, scoring four straight times to get back within five at 15-10. Howley started the run with an unassisted tally, followed by a Goncalves score and two more by Honovich.

But the visitors could not string together consecutive goals again the rest of the way, as Eastern maintained its advantage and didn't let their opponent back in the contest.

Eastern finished the day with a 34-28 edge in shots, including a 21-11 advantage in the first half. Senior Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) made seven saves in a losing effort, while Lindsey Corbitt (two saves) and Kristy Getsay (six saves) split the time in goal for the Eagles.

Manhattanville (2-9, 1-1 Freedom) will continue Freedom Conference play on Saturday, as the Valiants play the fourth of their five-game road trip at Misericordia beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern (4-6, 2-0 Freedom) will host Rowan on Thursday at 4 p.m.
