Valiants Succumb to King's (Pa.) on the Road, 23-13

Sophomore Brooke Marcimo scored the first goal of the game for the Valiants on Saturday.
Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lady Monarchs' Chelsea Manes and Mariah Masciarelli tied for the game-high with 10 points each as Manhattanville was tripped up on the road on Saturday afternoon, falling to King's (Pa.) College by a 23-13 score in a Freedom Conference women's lacrosse matchup at McCarthy Stadium.

Sophomore Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) scored a team-high five goals and junior Maggie Howley (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) added four for the visitors, but it was not nearly enough to stop a balanced Monarch attack. Manes led all players with six goals and added four assists, followed by Masciarelli, Krystina Villerreal and Emily Foley with four goals apiece. Masciarelli added a game-best six assists as well for the home team.

Sophomore Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) put the Valiants ahead only 20 seconds into the game with her seventh of the year off a feed from Honovich, but things quickly went downhill for the visitors as King's scored the next nine tallies to take a 9-1 lead with 17:24 left in the half. Manhattanville scored five of the next seven goals, including three from Honovich and one each from Howley and sophomore Britney Themistocles (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), to get back into the contest before the Lady Monarchs netted the final two tallies of the half to take a 13-6 lead into the break.

King's reestablished itself early in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the frame to reach a double-digit lead for the first time. The Valiants came back with the next three, including the first collegiate score from freshman Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields), but the home team scored five in a row over the next nine minutes to open up the largest lead of the game at 21-9 with 7:08 remaining.

The final shot totals were not skewed in either direction, as King's posted a 39-32 edge in total attempts, but the Lady Monarchs also posted a bigger 33-22 edge in shots on goal. Megan Withrow earned the win in goal for King's by making nine saves, while junior Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) suffered the loss despite turning aside 10 shots.
