BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team finished up their 10 game non-conference slate with a trip to Babson Park, Massachusetts and fell to the Babson Beavers by a score of 10-5 on Saturday afternoon. Leading the way for the second straight game was junior
Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) who had a pair of goals in defeat.
The Beavers controlled much of the early play outshooting their guests by a 10-2 margin and in the process putting the first three goals on the board getting them past junior goalie Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit). The Valiants' third shot came from the stick of Sahakian who took a pass from sophomore Brendan Kuntz (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) to trim the lead to 3-1 with 2:16 to go in the first quarter.
Less than a minute later the Beavers regained their three goal edge and took that lead into the second period. In the second quarter Manhattanville won the opening draw as freshman Antonio Ramos picked up the ground ball, after both teams exchanged turnovers freshman Connor Castleman (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) cut the lead in half with his seventh goal of the season.
A minute after Castleman scored, Babson answered right back as Alex Patinkin scored his second goal of the game as he finished the afternoon leading all players with four points. Sahakian kept the Valiants within two once again as he scored with 9:44 to go after picking up a pass from classmate Billy Motherway to make the score 5-3. Babson scored twice more before the second quarter expired and took their largest lead of the first half into the intermission.
Babson stormed out of the second half gates quickly, and not only killed off a one minute penalty but scored six seconds after the penalty released to open up an 8-3 lead. Manhattanville continued to fight back as junior Peter Callahan (Fairfield, Conn./Salisbury School) scored his first collegiate goal with 11:29 to go in the third quarter. The score remained the same for the next nine minutes until Babson took advantage of a turnover and planted the ninth goal for the Beavers.
In the fourth quarter, freshman Corey Steimel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) scored his team leading 13th goal of the year as he got the ball past James Whalen to make it 9-5 with 10:44 to go in the final quarter. Both teams were able to get one shot possessions over the waning minutes of the fourth quarter as both the Beavers and Valiants committed a combined 14 turnovers down the stretch of the game. Babson netted one more goal with 2:15 to go to cap off the scoring and give the home team the 10-5 win.
In goal Poletto takes the loss despite making 21 saves and allowed all 10 Beaver goals. Earning the win was Whalen who made 12 saves while yielding the five Manhattanville goals.
Manhattanville (2-8) will compete in their first ever Freedom Conference game next Saturday when they host Misericordia at 1:00 p.m. with the game being broadcast live on GoValiants.TV and live stats available on GoValiants.com. Babson (6-4, 1-0 Pilgrim Lacrosse League) will return to action on Wednesday against UMass Boston at 7:00 p.m.
