Men's Hoops Shakes Off Rough Shooting Night to Outlast Hunter, 63-58 (OT)

Sophomore Anthony Maestre had a team-best 17 points, including a game-clinching three late in overtime.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's basketball team overcame a rough shooting night to hit some big shots when it mattered most, as the result was a hard-fought 63-58 (OT) victory over visiting Hunter in a non-conference battle on Monday night at Kennedy Gymnasium.

While the stats might not have been the prettiest, Manhattanville (3-4) got 17 points from sophomore Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) and 12 from senior Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) to lead a varied Valiant attack, while senior Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. The Valiants shot on 32.8 percent (22 for 67) on the evening, but made up for that with a 56-44 edge on the glass.

Hunter (2-4) received a game-high 33 points from Frankie Drayton, but the rest of his team combined for only 25 points. Eric Kippins was the only other Hawk to provide any semblance of help, posting a nice all-around game with 12 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Drayton carried his team down the stretch, scoring 16 of Hunter's final 18 points of regulation. His last bucket countered a jumper from sophomore Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) and knotted the score at 54 with 1:46 remaining. Both teams turned the ball over to bring the clock under one minute, and a missed three by Maestre opened the door for the Hawks. But Drayton was denied twice by the Manhattanville defense in the final 33 seconds, including a step-back three from the corner that rimmed out as time expired.

After not shooting well all night long, the Valiants seemed to finally gain some confidence in overtime, hitting three of their seven shots in the extra time. Maestre put Manhattanville up 57-54 with a three-pointer, and a jumper from sophomore Andrew Winter (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) maintained the three-point edge with under two minutes to go. After a Kippins tip in made it a 59-58 game, Maestre hit his biggest shot of the night, a three-pointer that gave the Valiants a 62-58 lead with 30 seconds remaining.

A missed three by Drayton was followed up by a rebound and free throw by freshman Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), allowing Manhattanville to escape with the non-conference victory.

Winter also had a good game on the glass for Manhattanville, hauling in a season-best 10 rebounds to go with six points, while junior Connor Quigley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) had five of the team's 56 boards.

Manhattanville will look to carry the momentum of Monday's win into its Freedom Conference opener on Wednesday night, when the Valiants host Eastern at Kennedy Gym beginning at approximately 8 p.m. Fans that can't make it to Purchase can follow the live video stream on GoValiants.TV.
