Campbell's Freebies Help Men's Hoops Get Past Cougars for First Freedom Win

Senior Colin Campbell set a new career high in points to lead the Valiants to a win.
Box Score DALLAS, Pa. - Senior Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) led all scorers with a career-high 27 points thanks to a 15-of-16 effort from the charity stripe as the Manhattanville men's basketball team picked up its first Freedom Conference win of the season with a 73-63 victory at Misericordia on Saturday afternoon.

Campbell hit six of his 10 attempts from the field but he made his real mark at the line, where his 15 made attempts are tied for fourth-most in a game in program history and the most by a Valiant since Mark Prendergast sunk 15 way back on January 29, 1986 against SUNY Old Westbury.

Manhattanville (4-5, 1-1 Freedom) as a team shot 80.0 percent (24 for 30) from the line in the victory, including 21 of 25 attempts in the second half alone as the visitors held off the Cougars. The Valiants also shot 52.4 percent (22 for 42) from the field on the day.

Sophomores Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) and Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) also reached double figures in scoring with 18 and 11 points, respectively, while senior Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) hauled in 12 rebounds to go with eight points before fouling out.

After the Cougars held the lead in the opening minutes, Manhattanville got its first lead on a Bramswig three-pointer with 4:36 gone by in the first half. After a Cougar bucket knotted the score at seven, the Valiants scored on their next three possessions thanks to a Maestre jumper and two Campbell layups to take a 13-7 lead, an advantage the team would never give up.

The lead was only four at 17-13 before the visitors went on a 17-6 run to take a 15-point lead with 5:58 remaining in the half. Six different players had a bucket for the squad during the run. The advantage grew to as many as 17 points with 93 seconds left on a three-pointer by Bramswig, and the team went into the half with a 15-point edge at 42-27.

The Valiants were never really threatened in the second half, although the Cougars did get the deficit down to seven points on three occasions. Manhattanville went a perfect 9 for 9 from the line down the stretch to preserve the victory, with Campbell sinking six straight attempts and Maestre making all three of his shots.

Manhattanville will close out the 2013 calendar year next Friday, December 20, when the Valiants host Wells in a non-conference matchup at Kennedy Gym beginning at 1 p.m.
