Men's Hoops Has Playoff Hopes Dashed by Delaware Valley, 79-71

Box Score DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Despite four players scoring in double figures, the Manhattanville men's basketball team had their postseason hopes officially dashed on Tuesday night thanks to a 79-71 loss to Delaware Valley in the penultimate game of the season on Tuesday night at James Work Gymnasium.

The loss, combined with FDU-Florham's win over Eastern tonight, officially eliminates Manhattanville (10-14, 4-9 Freedom) from postseason contention, as the Valiants along with three other teams are two games back of the Devils with one game remaining. Delaware Valley (17-7, 11-2) remains in a tie for first place in the conference with the victory.

Four Valiants scored in double figures in the contest, led by junior Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) with a team-high 17 points. Classmate Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) added 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the year, freshman Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) scored 14 points, and fellow freshman Andrew Winter (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) chipped in with 11 points and eight boards.

Delaware Valley's Jeremy Beckett led all scorers with 28 points, hitting 10-of-14 shots from the field and 8-of-10 attempts from the line. Francis Arnold added 14 points and six assists while Jay Donovan contributed 10 points and a team-best 13 rebounds.

The Valiants did not have a great shooting night despite having their four double-digit scorers, connecting at a 38.6 percent (27 for 70) clip and making two fewer baskets despite taking 11 more shots than their opponents. The Aggies finished the evening shooting 49.2 percent (29 for 59) from the field.

Manhattanville opened the game with buckets on three of its first four possessions, getting two points from grad student Craig Augustine (Citrus, Fla./Citrus) and four from Campbell to take an early 6-0 lead. The Valiants held onto their lead until Zach Sibel capped a quick 7-0 run with a layup that gave the Aggies their first lead of the night at 18-17 with 11:35 to go in the half.

The teams traded the lead multiple times over the next few minutes before Delaware Valley used a 12-2 run to open up its largest lead of the game, 37-26, with 4:00 remaining. But the visitors were able to make a dent in that lead before the half, as a three from Maestre and a Bramswig steal and layup concluded a brief 6-0 run that made it a manageable 40-36 deficit at the break.

The visitors knocked down some shots to start the second half, and got the deficit down to one at 47-46 with 14:58 to go in the contest on a Bramswig layup. The Valiants remained within two possessions until eight straight Aggie points pushed their lead back into double figures at 61-51 with 9:05 remaining.

A three-point play from sophomore Wills Flynn (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) and a layup from Winter got the Aggie lead right back down to five a few minutes later, but Beckett seemingly had an answer for every Valiant run that helped keep his team out of reach. After a three from Maestre made it a six-point game headed under two minutes, Beckett had one final response with a key three-point play that made it 74-64 with 62 seconds left and helped to seal the win.

Manhattanville will conclude the 2012-13 season on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants travel to Misericordia for a 3 p.m. matchup against the Cougars.
