Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Manhattanville softball team closed out its 2013 trip to the NTC Spring Games in frustrating fashion on Wednesday morning, dropping a pair of games to Cornell (Iowa) and Monmouth (Ill.) at the National Training Center.
The first game of the day was a lopsided affair for Manhattanville, as Cornell cruised to a 12-3 victory in five innings.
More information on game one will come later in the evening.
The second game of the morning was much closer yet equally frustrating for the Valiants, as the squad managed just one run on four hits in a 4-1 loss to Monmouth.
The Scots got things started in the first inning by scraping across a run on an RBI single from Caitlin Lingle, but the Valiants responded with one of their own in the bottom of the first after sophomore
Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) led off with a walk and raced all the way around on a double from sophomore
Laura Montalto (Bronx, N.Y./Preston).
Sophomore
Kristen Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and her counterpart Alyssa Edler both settled down after the opening frame, trading zeroes on the scoreboard for the next four innings. However, the Scots got a sacrifice fly by Charlotte Park in the sixth inning to regain the lead, and then scored two unearned runs in the seventh on an error and a passed ball.
Manhattanville brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with two outs, but could not score again.
Rodopoulos (1-4) again pitched well but didn't get much support, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts over her seven innings. Edler (2-0) allowed only one run on four hits to earn the win for the Scots.
Manhattanville (3-7) will return north and have just a few days to get ready for Freedom Conference play, as the Valiants are scheduled to travel to Eastern for a pair of games on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
