Men's Lacrosse Drops Decision to Strong Montclair State Team

Box Score MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team fell on the road to the Montclair State Red Hawks by the score of 19-3 on Saturday afternoon on Sprague Field. Seniors Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) and Billy Motherway, as well as freshman Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) picked up the Valiant goals in defeat. Senior Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) made another 17 saves in the losing effort.
 
The Red Hawks got on the board first as Sam Morrissey netted the first tally of the game just 3:50 into the contest, shortly thereafter Montclair State won the ensuing faceoff and scored once again for its second goal in 10 seconds to take a 2-0 lead.
 
With Montclair State leading 3-0, Motherway put up Manhattanville's first goal of the game after a successful clear attempt and pull the Valiants within a pair of goals with 4:13 left in the opening quarter. The Red Hawks added several more goals until the 10:28 mark left in the half when Sahakian scored his sixth goal of the season to make the score 6-2 in favor of the home team.
 
The home team scored two more goals in an eight-second span and increased its lead to seven as the first half continued to wind down. With 8:49 left in the period, Normandin brought the Valiants to as close as they could get through the remainder of the contest at a 7-3 score.
 
Montclair State rattled off nine consecutive goals including four in the second half to blow the game open and come away with the 16-3 victory. The Red Hawks were led by Jack Skeels, who had five goals and a pair of assists on 13 shots while picking up six ground balls. Montclair State also got four goals and one assist on 11 shots from Sam Morrissey in the victory.
 
In goal for Manhattanville, Poletto (0-5) made 17 saves over 56:54 worth of work while yielding 15 of Montclair State's 16 goals. Sophomore Ray Zimlin (Graniteville, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) made his season debut for the final 3:06 of the game and allowed the final goal that the Red Hawks scored on the afternoon. Earning the win was Michael Dorn, who played in the first half and registered 8 saves while allowing all three Valiant goals. Drew Lamela came on for the second half and stopped all eight shots sent on cage by the Valiants.
 
Despite losing, Manhattanville did have a season-high as a team with 32 shots, including 19 that were on target. The Valiants were also 24-of-29 on clear attempts, while also picking up 32 ground balls. The team did struggle in man-up situations going 0-of-8 on extra-man opportunities, while Montclair State was 1-of-3 on its attempts.
 
Manhattanville (0-5) will be in action once again on the road when it travels to Farmingdale to take on the Rams this Wednesday with a start time slated for 4 p.m. Montclair State (4-2) will also be in action on Wednesday, when it travels to Hoboken, N.J. to take on the Stevens Ducks.
