Women's Lax Falls to Western New England, 20-9

Senior Melissa Goncalves had three goals and two assists on Saturday.
Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Manhattanville women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight game to start the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants fell by a 20-9 score to Western New England in a non-conference contest at Golden Bear Stadium.
 
Kaitlynn Stevens and Jessica Scannapieco led all players with seven points apiece for Western New England, as Stevens scored six times with an assist while Scannapieco had three goals to go with a game-high four assists. Taylor Scialdone added three goals and two assists as well for the Golden Bears.
 
Senior Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and junior Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) tied for the team lead with three goals and two assists apiece, while senior Maggie Howley (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) found the net twice and junior Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) added one tally for the Valiants.
 
After neither team scored in the first four-plus minutes of action, WNE scored twice in 15 seconds on goals by Julianne Greene and Stevens to take an early two-goal lead. Scannapieco made it a 3-0 advantage before Goncalves got her team on the board with an unassisted tally with 20:36 left in the opening half.
 
Two more Golden Bear scores were countered by a pair in 18 seconds off the stick of Goncalves, but the home team rattled off seven straight goals to open up a 12-3 lead. Manhattanville ended the frame with scores by Honovich and Howley, but still went into the intermission down by eight at 13-5.
 
After a goal by Honovich started the second half, Western New England again used a prolonged scoring run to secure control of the game, scoring six straight to open up its largest lead of the game at 19-6 with 15:54 left.
 
The Valiants scored three of the game's final four goals, getting tallies from Honovich, Marcimo and Howley to conclude the scoring.
 
For the game, Western New England took 32 shots to Manhattanville's 18, while also holding a 26-15 edge in shots on target. Freshman Caitlin Sosa (New York, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) suffered the loss in goal, making six saves in a losing effort, while Emily Castleman made five saves over the first 42:09 to earn the win for WNE.
 
Manhattanville (0-2) will return home on Thursday, as the Valiants welcome Kean to GoValiants.com Field for another non-conference matchup beginning at 4 p.m. The live GoValiants.TV broadcast will begin at 3:50 p.m.
