Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and junior
Mike Arena (Stratford, Conn./Saint Joseph) each scored twice, but it wasn't enough as the Manhattanville men's lacrosse team dropped a weekend matinee against the Utica Pioneers by a 12-5 score on GoValiants.com Field on Saturday.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 16 seconds into the first quarter, when Justin Edelstein netted his first of three goals scored on the afternoon. Utica took a 2-0 lead at the 6:59 point of the period, as Zach Stevenson got the ball past Manhattanville senior goalkeeper
Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) to take the two-goal edge.
Motherway trimmed the lead in half with 3:05 left in the period on an unassisted effort to make the score 2-1. Shortly thereafter the Pioneers regained their two-goal lead just 30 seconds later. The Valiants answered right back as Arena picked up his first of the afternoon after receiving a pass from senior
Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) from behind the net to make the score 3-2 which is where the game stood heading into the second quarter.
Utica picked up the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead with 9:10 left in the second period. The Valiants again trimmed the lead in half as sophomore
Tom Tarczali (Stratford, Conn./Saint Joseph) picked up his third goal of the season after coming around from the back side of the cage occupied by Utica netminder Andrew DiOrio.
The Pioneers scored two more goals with the game crossing over to the second half, and with 6:49 remaining in the third quarter Arena netted his second. After a turnover by DiOrio right in front of his crease, Arena picked the ball up from the ground and threw it into the vacant net to make the score 8-4.
Utica rattled off four more goals consecutively to take a 12-4 lead into the final minute of regulation. With the Valiants a man-down the Pioneers turned the ball over and Motherway streaked down the field and took a strong right-handed shot to get it to the back of the net and cap off the scoring at 12-5.
Earning his first collegiate victory was DiOrio, who spent his rookie season with Division II LIU Post, while making 11 saves and causing a pair of turnovers in the process. Taking his third loss of the season was Poletto, who made 14 saves for the second consecutive game after making 17 in the season opener.
Both teams struggled on man-up situations, with the Valiants going 0-for-6 and the Pioneers going 0-for-5, while also allowing the man-down goal to Motherway late in the game. Faceoffs were fairly close with Utica earning wins in 11-of-20 on the afternoon, while both squads also had successful afternoons in terms of clear attempts with Manhattanville going 18-for-25 and Utica going 16-for-20 on its attempts.
