Valiants Defeated by Eastern in Freedom Conference Opener

Box Score ST DAVIDS, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team opened up its 2013 conference schedule with a loss to the Eastern Eagles on Wednesday afternoon by the score of 19-6. Senior Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) netted three goals in the loss for the Valiants.
 
Eastern opened the scoring just three minutes into the game, then scored quickly on the next possession to go up 2-0. The Eagles scored twice more in the period, including their fourth tally of the game with just two seconds to go in the stanza.
 
The Eagles rattled off nine more consecutive goals to take complete control of the game with a strong 13-0 lead.
 
Manhattanville finally got on the board with 2:11 left in the half as senior Jordan Kolb (Sisters, Ore./Sisters) picked up his first career goal on an unassisted marker after a successful clear attempt. The Valiants went into the halftime break down by a dozen goals.
 
In the second half, Eastern tacked on another goal to take a 14-1 lead and in the process chased Manhattanville senior goalkeeper Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) from the game after yielding 14 goals, and making 13 stops.
 
Sophomore Ray Zimlin (Graniteville, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) came in to play goal and the goalie change sparked the Manhattanville offense into four straight goals. Motherway picked up his first with 7:59 left in the third period. The next goal came off the stick of Mike Arena (Stratford, Conn./Saint Joseph), who took a pass from Kolb to make the score 14-3 with the game going to the final period.
 
In the fourth, Motherway and sophomore Jack Polak (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) picked up goals as Manhattanville closed the margin to nine with 14:06 left in regulation. Eastern added to its lead with four straight tallies to take an 18-5 edge.
 
Motherway picked up his third of the contest in a man-up situation, as he took a pass from classmate Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) for his first point of the afternoon. Eastern scored once more with 4:04 left in regulation to cap off the scoring at 19-6.
 
The Valiants were outshot in the contest by a 66-25 margin, with shots on goal at 41-16 as the Eagles held Manhattanville to just one shot on goal in the first half. Ground balls were also in favor of the Eagles at a 49-21 clip, with face-offs also tilted towards Eastern at 21-8.
 
In goal, Poletto took the loss after playing the first 31:47 in goal for Manhattanville. Zimlin came on for the final 28:13 of the game and allowed five goals while making nine stops. Earning the win was Aaron Benz, after allowing just one goal without making a save through the first 30 minutes. The Eagles used three other goalies to finish off the game as they picked up 10 saves and allowed five goals.
 
Manhattanville (0-11, 0-1 Freedom) will be on the road again this Saturday when the team travels to Misericordia for a date with the Cougars at 1 p.m. Eastern (9-2, 2-0 Freedom) will be home once again on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when the team hosts the Monarchs of King's College.
