Senior Sendoff Soured in Men's Lacrosse Finale vs. DeSales

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team ended its 2013 campaign on Saturday afternoon with a loss to the DeSales Bulldogs by the score of 23-9 on GoValiants.com Field. Senior Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) rounded out his career with a five-point effort with three goals and two assists.
 
Prior to the start of the contest, Sahakian along with senior classmates Drew Newgaard (Sterling, Va./Blue Ridge School), Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), Jordan Kolb (Sisters, Ore./Sisters), Justin Figueroa (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) and Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) were honored in a pregame ceremony.
 
The Valiants jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as freshman Nate Coleman (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) opened up the scoring with his second goal of the season. DeSales answered back less than 10 seconds later to tie the game.
 
Figueroa picked up a goal with 11:01 left in the first quarter but again DeSales answered back to tie the game at two. DeSales took a 3-2 lead, but Sahakian picked up his first of three goals on the afternoon with sophomore Antonio Ramos grabbing the assist as the game was once again tied at three. The Bulldogs scored once more and took a one-goal edge into the second quarter.
 
DeSales took its first multi-goal lead as the team scored the first goal of the second quarter, but Sahakian came down the field and scored another goal with a helper from the stick of sophomore Jack Polak (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) to make the game 5-4 in favor of DeSales.
 
The Bulldogs took a three-goal lead, but again Manhattanville came back with a goal out of the stick from sophomore Tom Tarczali (Stratford, Conn./Saint Joseph) with Sahakian picking up his third point of the half by way of an assist. DeSales scored twice more and took a 9-5 lead into the break.
 
After halftime, Coleman netted his second of the game to kick off the scoring in the second half and again DeSales responded with two quick strikes to open up a five-goal edge. Junior Eric Brown (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) scored next for Manhattanville with Sahakian nabbing the helper and the Valiants were once again within four.
 
Over a span of 2:30 the Bulldogs outscored Manhattanville 3-1, with the lone Valiant goal coming from Tarczali for his second of the contest. DeSales scored a few more times to increase its lead to eight just ahead of Sahakian's third goal of the contest with freshman Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) picking up the helper.
 
DeSales wrapped up the game scoring five more goals, the first two of which were scored against Poletto, who then came off for Poletto after a well-played career as a four-year starter for the crimson and white. Sophomore Ray Zimlin (Graniteville, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) played the remainder of the game and yielded three more goals through the final few minutes of play as DeSales ran away with the game late with a 23-9 win.
 
Earning the win was Matt Warnken, who played all 60 minutes and made nine saves while allowing all nine Manhattanville goals. The loss went to Poletto, after a 16-save effort, Zimlin made a pair of saves in the final 13:45 to end the game.
 
Manhattanville wraps up its 2013 season, and will look ahead to the 2014 season and the third under head coach Kevin Warnock. DeSales wraps up its regular season and will play in the Freedom Conference semifinals against second seeded Misericordia on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
